A full set of motorcycling gear consists of a helmet, gloves, boots, jacket and pants. A full new set for a beginner costs around $1000. By buying some items used, you can get the price as low as $500.

Where to Buy Gear

Don't buy safety gear from Amazon. The risk of receiving a counterfeit or gray market item is too high because their fulfillment centers bin multiple suppliers together.

You can buy also buy used gear from Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp, and rider's forums like ADVrider.com.

Boots

Beginners should wear full-height stiff motorcycling boots. More experienced riders may choose riding shoes which trade off protection in favor of a more casual look. Off-road riders should wear motocross boots. If you ride in rain you will need waterproof boots.

Do not wear steel-toed boots on a motorcycle. The metal toe is not designed for tumbling impacts and can cause additional injuries to your foot in a crash.

Jacket

Jackets are available in **leather, textile** or mesh. Regardless of the type of jacket, it should include CE-rated armor pads in the arms and shoulders. A spine protector should be used unless the rider uses an airbag vest. The spine protector may be sold separately, so be sure to account for it in the cost.
