How do I buy insurance?
- Get multiple quotes. A quote is when you tell the insurance what you want to insure and how much insurance you want to buy, and they offer you a price (called the premium). The quote will be valid for a short period of time for you to confirm (i.e. accept the offer and pay the premium).
- Most major insurance companies have websites where you can get quotes from your computer.
- You can also use an insurance broker, where you talk to a person about your insurance needs and they research quotes for you.
- Once you have the quote, you can buy it immediately, set it to start on a future date, or choose not to buy it
An inexhaustive list of US motorcycle insurance providers:
- Allstate
- Dairyland
- GEICO
- Liberty Mutual
- Nationwide
- Progressive
- State Farm
- VOOM (mileage-based pricing, for owners of infrequently used bikes)
I have had positive experiences with Progressive and Dairyland and have no experience of the others.
How do insurance companies decide how much to charge?
It varies by local law, but some potential factors are:
- Credit score! Better credit = lower premiums
